Arrow forms up behind 145 Army Cadets

Isaac Region’s 145 Army Cadet Unit is marching to a safer tune following a gift of equipment and training from Arrow Energy.

Arrow has provided the unit with a portable defibrillator, while Arrow’s company nurse presented training sessions on its use.

“The portable defibrillator device will mobilise with the unit during its training and community engagement activities like Anzac day services,” said 145 Army Cadet Unit Parent Support Group Vice President Paul Cliffe.

“Cadets are in the field at least four times a year, often in remote areas.

“The 145 Army Cadet Unit Parent Support Group wishes to provide a safe environment for its officers, cadets, volunteer helpers and community members, and this device and training will give the unit a capacity for early intervention defibrillation in the instance of sudden cardiac arrest.

“We have received initial training in its use and will continue to train new cadets and volunteers as they come through the unit.”

The 145 Army Cadet Unit (Isaac Region) began operation in July 2017 and now has 55 youth members from Moranbah and Dysart, aged between 13 and 17.

Arrow’s Manager Community and Communications, Liz Edwards, acknowledged the unit’s role as a personal development program that benefits the community.

“Arrow is pleased to be able to support the safety of the young cadets belonging to 145 ACU as they advance themselves,” Ms Edwards said.

“Aside from their own protection, the defibrillator and its training means these people are developing a skill they can take back to their community and have throughout their lives.”

The defibrillator was provided through Arrow’s Brighter Futures community investment program.

Brighter Futures supports local, not-for-profit groups on projects that build community capacity in health, safety, education and environmental awareness. Through it, Arrow has contributed more than $25 million to communities in its footprint.

Other Bowen Basin groups awarded Brighter Futures funding from the final 2018 funding round are:

• Rock FM Association Incorporated, Moranbah – a drive-time initiative to address times of peak driving fatigue in Isaac region, such as during worker shift changes. The initiative will include driver safety messaging, accompanied by music playlists that are carefully programmed to engage drivers and keep them focussed on getting home to family and friends.
• Central Rodeo Cowboys Association, Rockhampton – providing ambulance attendance at the 2018 CRCA Titles finals at Nebo on December 1. This is a ‘bulls, broncos, bareback and barrels’ event that will determine the champions of a 17-event, year-long competition. Between 1000 and 1500 people are expected to attend.
• Central Queensland Helicopter Rescue Service Mackay – ongoing sponsorship of CQ Rescue’s aeromedical and search and rescue services between Townsville and Rockhampton and out to Moranbah.
• Yumba Bimbi Support Services, Emerald – for implementing the Bush Discovery Project nature play program for children with disabilities in the Bowen Basin. The program is based on evidence showing the value of nature play in health and learning. It will provide children and their parents and carers with a nurturing, safe and relaxing environment to explore nature together.
